Trash

Its all a bit of a whirlwind at the moment and all my creative and writing energy is going elsewhere so not much activity on either of my blogs. The secret project moves on apace but isn't ready for the big time just yet.

The public sector (in the shape of the British Library) continues to fry my head. The main problem is that no one cares about the big picture. Note that I am not knocking the people I work with, I have met some extraordinarily talented people at the library and its a real pleasure to work with them. No the problem is bigger than that, in lieu of a director or board or shareholders actually trying to ensure that the library does what is in its own interests, there is instead a Byzantine framework of obscure rules that I suspect where devised in order to produce an simulacrum of people caring. It doesn't work. It is also not really suited to work in the internet domain which is fast moving and extremely dynamic. The library is capable of making glaciers look hasty and a bit 'fly by night".

Some reviews from a bit ago:

When I was in Canada my jet lag stopped me sleeping much which in turn gave me huge amounts of free time. Canadian TV didn't float by boat so I turned to DVD's and UK TV via downloads. I don't really get to watch much TV at the moment - children and Abby all get priority over what is on and more often than not I too tired to watch much anyway. I finally got to watch the Lord of the Rings: I went for the extended edition and I have to say its pretty wonderful except for the end. The film captures the vast spectacle and the epic nature of the story brilliantly and sacrilegious as it might seem I would be tempted to recommend the film over the book. The ending is just pathetic though - what seemed like an eternity of slushy sugar after what is quite a dark few hours. Oddly it fades to black just prior to the sugary bit so perhaps Peter Jackson was hinting at something there. The other wonderful discovery was Dead Man Weds - Johnny Vegas and the guy from phoenix nights thats not Peter Kay (too lazy to google - sorry) in a small town paper type situation. I absolutely loved it - full of lots of little details and silly jokes as well as having a pretty well crafted main plot. I am just working through Ed Reardons week from Radio 4 at the moment which is also pretty good and pointed in its humour.

Some reviews from now:

Excellent things: Peter Hamilton: Pandoras Star, Rune Grammofon - Alog, Deathprod, Hafler Trio - Master of Money and Exactly as I Say, Ian Macdonald - River of Gods, Coil - Moons Milk, Angels of Light - Everything is good here, PyObjc and my powerbook in general. Tescos new range of thin pizzas

Rumors of my Birthday being spread by

More interesting news when I can talk about what I am up to more.
